(NASL 2014 Fall) New York Cosmos 0v0 FC Edmonton

Wednesday 6th August 2014
Hofstra University, New York   Attendance -  4,524

Cosmos poor run of results continued as they drew another blank after a 0v0 draw with FC Edmonton. Given both sides struggles in front of a goal this result was hardly a surprise, but Cosmos will rue a rare penalty miss from Marcos Senna which cost them maximum points.

Dimitrov was given a rare start as an off form Stokkelien was benched, but the striker squandered an early chance as he lost his footing in the 3rd minute after Edmonton had lost possession deep in their own half. The visitor created the next chance on 19mins after some poor defending let in Horace James, but before he could test Maurer Guenzatti did well to block the effort.
There was little action to speak of for the majority of the half from either side, although there was  flurry of chances as the half came to  lose. Cosmos created for Szetela and Dennisen were spurned as both players failed to get a clean connection on their shots. But Edmonton should have gone in ahead as they caught Cosmos out on a counter attack, but Maurer came to the home sides rescue saving from a one on one from Ameobi after good work from Horace James.
Cosmos had a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the 2nd half after the referee awarded a penalty. Smits, the Eddies Keeper failed to deal with a long throw in and fouled Johnson in the process, only for the usually deadly Senna to blaze the spot kick over.
The visitors almost made the Cosmos pay just past the hour mark when an Edmonton player came within millimetres of connection from a knock down, but Maurer was relieved to see the ball drift harmlessly across the goalmouth.
Senna almost made amends for his penalty miss from a free kick, but the ball skimmed the top of the net and the Cosmos goal drought continued. Chirishian was introduced to the action, but he could do no better as he failed to keep a half volley down after a flick on from fellow sub Stokkelien.
Ameobi was shown a harsh red card in the 74th minute following a foul on Szetela, but despite the man disadvantage it was Edmonton who came closest to breaking the deadlock when Hlavaty struck the corner of the goal frame from a free kick. At the other end the Cosmos were applying pressure, but Smits was proving a difficult opponent and he made a great save from an Ayoze free kick to deny the home side. Cosmos could not get the game winning goal and racked up their 3rd straight game at home without a victory.
