Belson Stadium, New York Attendance - 1,851
A mostly second string Cosmos side were too strong for 4th tier side Brooklyn Italians as Cosmos progressed to the next round of the U.S. Cup.
2 strikes in the first third of the game put Cosmos into a commanding position early on and the Cosmos eased through to a mouth watering clash with New York Red Bulls with no further scoring in the game.
The Italians were never going to match the Cosmos for ability, so adopted a physical approach, which led to 2 red cards later on in the match.
With just 2 matches remaining in a closely contested NASL season, Cosmos Manager Savarese made several changes to the Cosmos side, with many fringe players getting a rare run out.
Despite the unfamiliar line up the Cosmos threatened in the early stages with Szetela coming close to scoring with a fifth minute volley. It didn't take long for the NASL side to make the breakthrough and James Ockford made it 1v0 with a header from an Ayoze corner, the Seattle Sounders loanee is building up a goalscoring reputation after bagging 2 in Pre Season, despite his lack of regular season action.
Cosmos threatened to double the lead soon after with efforts from Chirishian and Szetela on the Brooklyn goal.
Chirishian made it 2v0 for the Cosmos, capitalising on a rebound from Brooklyn Keeper Sheldon Parkinson.
The 2nd half was more physical, with the visitors reduced to 10 men after Salvatore Barone was sent off.
Brooklyn were unable to put Maurer under any pressure, failing to register a shot on target in the whole game.
Hans Dennisen made a long awaited debut for the Cosmos, coming on as a 2nd half substitute in the latter stages.
The visitors were reduced to 9 men as Yannick Diese was ordered off as the game drew to a close, as thoughts switched to a first ever match with the Red Bulls in the next round.
