Veterans Stadium, Connecticut Attendance -
The New York Cosmos opened their preseason
with a 6-0 win against Newtown Pride FC in a Charity Game at Veterans Stadium.
The Cosmos came close to opening the scoring
after 20 minutes when a dangerous cross from left-back Korey Veeder narrowly
evaded Satoru Kashiwase at the back post.
The Cosmos' attacking play was then nearly
rewarded in the 29th minute when Peri Marosevic was brought down in the box.
However, Ayoze's resulting spot kick was saved by the Newtown keeper Brad
Jeeves.
Ayoze made amends a minute later when the
Cosmos were awarded a free kick 20 yards from goal. The Spanish midfielder
curled a beautiful free kick up and over the wall to break the deadlock. The
Cosmos would take the one goal lead into halftime.
The Cosmos' attack came to life ten minutes
after the break. Henry Lopez doubled the Cosmos' lead with a drilled finish at
the back post after 55 minutes.
Trialist Alessandro Noselli made it 3-0 to
the Cosmos 15 minutes later when he headed home Hunter Freeman's lofted cross.
The Pride were reduced to ten men when Diego
Orlandi was shown a straight red card after a studs-up tackle on Stefan
Dimitrov.
Edison, another player on trial, made it 4-0
to the Cosmos when he exchanged passes with Korey Veeder and calmly slotted
home.
Substitute David Diosa added to the Cosmos
lead when he chipped the Pride Keeper. In the last minute of the match, Paulo
Mendes bundled home a Edison free kick to complete the 6-0 win.
