(US Open Cup 2015) New York Red Bulls 4v1 New York Cosmos

Wednesday 1st July 2015
Red Bull Arena, New Jersey   Attendance -  11,442

The Red Bulls gained revenge for their Open Cup loss to the Cosmos last season as the Cosmos exited the US Open Cup at the 4th round for the second year running.

Cosmos could not have made a worst start as they fell behind after just 4mins. Lloyd Sam picked out a totally unmarked Zizzo with his right wing cross and he headed past Maurer to give the MLS side an early lead. But after a shaky start the Cosmos settled down and Senna was spraying balls to Restrepo who was causing Red Bulls problems, forcing former Cosmos loanee Lade into being awarded an early yellow card.
It was Restrepo who was at the heart of the equaliser as he beat his marker with a clever dummy. With Red Bulls outnumbered at the back, the ball was played to Lucky, via Fernandes and Lucky had time to pick his spot for the equaliser.
It was an even contest but Red Bulls tried to go ahead when David let fly from outside the area, forcing Maurer to palm the ball over the bar. Just after the half hour mark Zizzo had the ball in the Cosmos net again, but this time the linesman's flag ruled the goal out.
Red Bulls regained the lead shortly before half time as Abang powered in a header from a corner, to spoil what had been a good half from the visiting side.
Cosmos almost levelled matters early in the 2nd half. After pressurising the Red Bulls defence they won the ball and 2nd half sub Raul was inches away from connecting with a Fernandes cross-shot , which would have tied things up. Soon after and the hosts had a similar chance with Abang close to getting a touch to a dangerous ball into the box.
But Cosmos chances of claiming a second derby scalp were dealt a blow when Red Bulls won a penalty. Gorskie was guilty of dawdling on the ball and allowed Duvall to steal the ball from him. Gorskie compounded his mistake by bringing down Duvall for a penalty as the Red Bull man cut into the box. Kljestan placed the ball past Maurer to make it 3v1 to the Red Bulls.
The home side survived a scare as Cosmos hit the woodwork twice from the same attack. Raul headed a Freeman cross onto the bar and Mkosana then hit the post as he latched onto the rebound. The Cosmos continued to look for the goal to get them back in the game and forced the Red Bulls keeper into a save from a Senna free kick which took a deflection off the wall.
As the game wore on Cosmos pushed numbers forward and were getting hit on the break. One such attack looked set to end in a goal, but a fantastic save from Maurer denied Felipe ftom close range. Cosmos' misery was complete in the 90th minute when Grella turned Gorskie in the area and buried the ball in the corner of the net.
