(US Open Cup) New York Cosmos 2v3 New England Revolution

Wednesday 29th June 2016
Belson Stadium, New York   Attendance -  1,264

For the 3rd year in succession Cosmos exited the US Open Cup at the 6th round. But Cosmos will be kicking themselves after throwing away a 2v1 lead with just 15mins remaining thanks to 2 poor defensive errors.
There was very little goalmouth action in the first quarter of the match, although Cosmos were asserting themselves well against the MLS side. Rev's Fagundez had the first strike of note on 23mins when his well struck effort flew over after hesitant defending by the Cosmos.
But soon after Cosmos squandered a golden chance to take the lead when Arango laid the ball off perfectly for an unmarked Arrieta, but the Rev's keeper won the 1 on 1 duel and kept the game scoreless.
Cosmos continued to impress and got the goal they deserved on 38mins. Arrieta laid off a low left wing cross into the run of Bover who made no mistake with the finish.
The MLS side struck back straight away with a goal of great quality. Fagundez picked out Bunbury with an inch perfect long ball and despite the attentions of a defender in front of him, Bunbury fired an effort high into the net to put his side level.
The Revs started the 2nd half the stronger and almost caught out Maurer with a clever shot from a crossing position as Maurer had left a gap at the near post and Maurer just about recovered to tip the effort from Bunbury wide. But Cosmos went up the other end and restored their lead after Guenzatti was allowed too much space in the area and his well placed shot crept in.
Again New England tried for an instant response and Roversio did well to block a Fagundez effort from close range. The Rev's brought on star striker Kei Kamara and he immediately made an impact as he set up Newman for a great chance, but the ball went over as New England were ramping up the pressure.
Rev's keeper Shuttleworth did well to keep out an Arrieta effort after the Cosmos forward did well to control a long pass under pressure.
But with just 15mins left to hold out the Cosmos threw it away gifting 2 goals to the Revolution. Maurer's poor kick out left to Kamara going through on goal. His squared pass was cut out by Roversio, but it fell conveniently back in the path to Kamara to finished to level the tie.
It got worse for the Cosmos as in the 83rd minute, substitute Moffat was caught in possession deep in his own half and the ball was played to the dangerous Bunbury who finished well to put the MLS side ahead for the first time, delivering the decisive blow.
