(NASL 2017 Fall) San Francisco Deltas 2v1 New York Cosmos

Saturday 5th August 2017
Kezar Stadium, San Francisco   Attendance -  3,369

A short spell at the end of the first half saw Cosmos lose 2 goals and ultimately a game after controlling much of the first half. Cosmos started strong and took the lead with the first real attack of the game. Calvillo was allowed space down the left wing and a low cross caused a scramble in the area and Vranjican was on hand to poke the ball in to give Cosmos an early lead.
Cosmos continued their bright start and Calvillo had an effort blocked as the Deltas continued to be pushed onto the back foot. The home side gradually crept back into a game that was being interrupted by a series of stoppages, but Maurer had still hardly been tested when the Deltas levelled matters.
A dangerous  free kick was played into the box and Hopkins was allowed to volley the ball home from close range.
There would be worse to come for the Cosmos as the home side were awarded a disputed penalty after a ball played into the Cosmos box. Heinemann stepped up to fire the ball past Maurer to give the home side the lead. Starikov could have provided an instant reply but after a scramble his effort on the turn fell straight to Peiser.
Cosmos started the 2nd half looking still wounded from the end of the 1st half and poor play by Ochieng led to a clear chance for Heinemann to add to his first half penalty, but this time Maurer was able to stop the effort to keep the deficit to one goal.
But Starikov produced a great volley just past the hour mark, only for Peiser again to deny the Cosmos man with a save. Tempers flared during the 2nd half which prevented Cosmos from building up momentum but Calvillo went close with a long range effort that clipped the post. Cosmos continued to search for an equaliser and Mkosana went close with a header shortly after coming on as sub.
In the games final minutes Deltas saw an effort go narrowly over, but the Deltas saw out the final minutes to secure a first victory for the San Francisco side over the Cosmos.
