Michael A Carroll Stadium, Indianapolis Attendance - 10,524
All
3 previous matches with Indy Eleven had ended in draws, so it was no surprise
to see the 2 sides unable to be separated in front of another sell out crowd.
Cosmos
made a decent start to the game but an error from Jimmy Maurer gave Indy an
early lead. Maurer came racing out of his area to intercept a long ball from
the home side, but his soft headed clearance fell straight to the feet of Brian
Brown. With Maurer well out of goal Brown chipped the ball into an unguarded
net to send the sell out crowd into celebration.
Cosmos
searched for quick equaliser and Indy
Keeper Nicht was called into action from an effort from Roversio from a corner.
Cosmos continued to threaten and Fernandes was found in a dangerous position
deep inside the Indy area, but the home side quickly pounced on him to block
his shot.
Cosmos
were dominating possession, but Indy were dangerous on the break and Dylan
Mares showed some pace to close in on goal and force a good save from Maurer.
Towards
the end of the first half a great ball from Fernandes played in Stokkelien,
only for the striker to miscontrol the ball as the chance went begging.
The
second half continued in the same fashion, with Cosmos dominating possession. A
well worked free kick gave Restrepo a sight of goal, but with the angle against
him he could only fire into the side netting. Cosmos patience would pay off as
Raul levelled the scores after 65mins.
Nicht
had made a good save from a fantastic volley from Stokkelien, but from the
resulting corner the resistance from the home side was finally broken. Restrepo
whipped the ball into the box and Raul rose to head home.
Indy
had hardly threatened the Cosmos goal at all in the 2nd half, but threatened in
the 78th minute when after a breakaway Rugg had an opportunity, but fired the
half chance wide. Despite continuing to
have the lions share of the ball the away side failed to create a clear chance
on goal, so yet again had to settle for a point against Indy.
